De mens is niet zo rationeel als we graag zouden geloven. Studies hebben aangetoond dat we vaak op een systematische en voorspelbare wijze denkfouten maken. Onze redeneringen steunen niet zozeer op de regels van de logica, als wel op eenvoudige denkstrategieën die leiden tot vooroordelen en illusies.

Bach en nummer 14

The cantata he composed especially for this service comprised two parts, which were performed before and after the sermon. The two parts are divided in turn into 14 sections – the Bach number. If you number all the letters of the alphabet from 1 to 26 and then add up the values of the b, a, c and h, you get 14. Bach often used this number as a sort of signature.

Ik ben een gekwelde geest in een afgetakeld lichaam. Ik was nooit van plan om oud te worden. Eigenlijk was er helemaal geen plan. Er is nog steeds geen plan. Het komt er gewoon niet van... zo'n plan...

Ik doe wel van alles, maar wat komt er van terecht? Wat zijn mijn doelen? Zijn er wel doelen? Waar staan die dan? Hoe kan je weten wat je bent vergeten? Waar moet dat heen? Hoe zal dat gaan?

Maar zo kan dat niet blijven. Er is nog zo veel te doen en zo weinig tijd. Waar wachten we nog op? Laten we niet blijven prutsen en een daad stellen. Een bevestiging dat het allemaal niet voor niets is geweest.

Maar misschien moeten we de dingen gewoon maar 's anders doen, de apen uit de mouwen steken en kijken waar het schip strand. Een nieuwe route, een nieuw geluid...
